Joel 2:23-32.  (After the aftermath) The previous verses describe with graphic detail the destruction of Jerusalem and Judah. These verses speak of a restoration to come and later a time when God’s Spirit would be poured out on ALL flesh with simultaneous portents in heaven and earth — while the sky is dark and the moon blood red, people of all ages and stations will prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams.

Psalm 65.  A psalm of thanksgiving for fruitful times, especially for a successful harvest. To offer this psalm in response to Joel is to participate in the promise of abundance to come. Response: “Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices.”

2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18.”The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.”

Devotional Diary 14 – 20 October 2019

20 October is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost.

Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

Use these readings in “The Word” step below.

Jeremiah 31:27-34.  Could this new covenant of the heart have its origins in the synagogues the exile may have given birth to?  The temple in Jerusalem was seldom visited by most Jews.  Now in exile they had an accessible place of worship.  They gathered regularly and involvement by the laity was far more extensive, prayers were offered instead of sacrifice.  Christ calls us to love the Lord our God with all our heart…

Psalm 19 “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.” (NIV)

2 Timothy 3:14—4:5.   Paul’s strong encouragement to a young preacher in difficult circumstances.

Luke 18:1-8.  In no ways must we compare the unjust judge to God.  The point here is the contrast.  God is just and willing; God is for us and not against us.  Therefore, pray for justice, trust that God is working for us.  If we stay with the heart, we can pray trustingly when we realise the nature of God’s heart.  This realisation transforms our own hearts and makes us for others (for justice) just as God is for us, and so we pray in partnership with a loving God.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name O Most High… (Psalm 92:1)
