Seasonal Rhythm

1 May:  Sixth Sunday of Easter.  Still the resurrection season this week with a focus on the Holy Spirit.  Romans 8:11 (CEB) “If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your human bodies also, through his Spirit that lives in you.”  What will God’s Spirit raise up in you?

Acts 16:9-15. Paul responds to a vision to go to Macedonia, arrives at Philippi, and finds opportunities for witness and a leader (Lydia) ready to begin a congregation in her house.

Psalm 67.  God’s way made known in all nations.

Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5.  In the Spirit, John sees a vision of the New Jerusalem and the way the whole world works in the fullness of God’s kingdom.

John 14:23-29. Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit will guide his disciples to understand, remember, and live out his teaching in all Truth.

 This week:  In our confessions we focus on our sins of omission, those things we have failed to do.  Our intercessions call you to bring your concerns in various areas of life that are given as a prompt for prayers.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 38:15) But I trust in you, O Lord; and you, O Lord my God, will answer me.

Confession: Lord, forgive us when we have failed to use the gifts and talents you have given us.  So often the easy option has been to bury our talents.  We offer you our gifts, use them and us for the work of your Kingdom, and help us to step out in service.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  This week we simply suggest an area of concern and you are invited to pray for any particular need that you feel called to.  Today you are invited to pray for a global concern.

Confession: Lord, forgive us for missed opportunities to witness to your name and glory.  Teach us how to speak the right word at the right time.

Dedication: Lord Jesus, help me to be so filled with your life that it may flow through me to others.

Wednesday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 36:7) How precious, O God, is your constant love!  We find protection under the shadow of your wings.

Confession: Lord, forgive us for missing an opportunity to reach out with a random action of care and hope.  Help us to care in your name.

Shared Focus: Today you are invited to pray for a concern that is of interest to your local area/district.

Thursday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 35:10) With all my heart I will say to the Lord, “There is no-one like you. …”

Confession:  Lord, forgive us for not acting on the promptings of your Spirit in our lives.  Make us sensitive to your divine whisperings in our lives.

Friday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 34:8) Find out for yourself how good the Lord is.  Happy are those who find safety with him.

Confession: Lord, forgive us for the neglect of our own lives and health (physical, mental and spiritual).  Teach us how to take care of ourselves so that we may better serve you and praise your name.

Shared Focus: Today you are invited to pray for a concern that relates to your place of work or your living environment.

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 33:11) But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally.

Confession: Lord, forgive us when we fail to give abundantly and cheerfully. Help us to give even as you gave to us.

Confession: Lord, forgive us when we have held ourselves back from worshipping you without reserve.  Help us to worship you, as you deserve.

Acts 11:1-18. Peter testifies to the saving work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of non-circumcised believers.

Psalm Response — Psalm 148All orders of creation, living and inanimate, are called to praise God.

Revelation 21:1-6God makes a final home among mortals on a new earth in which pain and suffering are no more.

John 13:31-35As Jesus faces the events leading to his execution, he commands his disciples, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

This week:  In our confessions this week we examine different arenas of our lives and ask that God may enable our faith to be lived out in them.  In our intercessions we pray against certain evils in our world.  In these prayers be conscious of our prayer for the dedication of our lives.  Christ has won the victory our evil!

Monday:

Adoration Focus: But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 59:16)

Confession: Lord God we pray that in the quiet moments of our lives as we become more aware of our inner life that your Spirit may bring about an inner transformation and connection that may empower the outward call of the Gospel.

Shared Focus:  This week we pray against evil of all kinds.  Today we pray against the evil of apathy in the face of suffering. Lord make us an action community of love!

Shared Focus: Today we pray against the evil of corruption.  Lord we pray for our land and all its officers.  We pray against the corruption that is in our own hearts and the excuses we make to justify our behaviour.

Confession: Lord we examine the works of our hands and bodies.  In our work enable us to build your Kingdom through works of love, justice and righteousness.

Shared Focus: Today we pray against the evil that makes life cheap and indispensable.   We pray against a society that encourages this in various ways. We pray against those who kill for theft.  We pray against those who kill for revenge and out of anger.  pray against war.  We pray against neglected lives and communities.

Thursday:

Adoration Focus: I will praise you forever for what you have done; in your name I will hope, for your name is good. (Psalm 52:9)

Confession: Lord we examine our church lives.  Forgive us when we are passengers and lead us into callings of service.  Enable us to live out the Gospel of truth through the body of Christ.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  Today we pray against the evil of prejudice.  For a prejudice that sows small seeds of hate that grow into battlefields of suffering.  Lord God teach us that prejudice against any person is a prejudice against the Creator of all.

Friday:

Adoration Focus: The Mighty One, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.(Psalm 50:1)

Confession:  Lord we pray that we may be guided as to how we can live out our faith in the context of our country.  Lord we find ourselves in this context, enable us to witness and be creative.

The Word:

Shared Focus: Today we pray against the evil of materialism – where the entire value of life is seen in terms of material possessions.  Lord help us to find our security in you and to learn that giving is more blessed than receiving.

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: But God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. (Psalm 49:15)

Confession: Lord we examine our witness when we are among those who do not know us.  When we are in shopping cues or dealing with strangers at work.  Teach us how to build a positive atmosphere in all our contacts and not just among our inner circle.

The Word:

Shared Focus: Today we pray against the evil of unbelief that prevents following Christ.  Where eyes are blinded and hearts are hardened.  Lord we pray that the witness of your church and the work of your Spirit may find fertile ground.

Adoration Focus: For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. (Psalm 48:14)

Confession: Pray for any arena of life where you sense you need to confess and be empowered for new life and direction.  God is with you in every arena of life.

Shared Focus:  This week we have prayed against evils of various kind. Today you are asked to choose any area of specific concern to you and pray against that evil and pray for God’s light to shine brightly and drive out the darkness.

Acts 9:36-43. Tabitha showed the power of the Risen Christ through good works, acts of charity and the clothing she made. By Christ’s power, she was also raised from death.

Psalm Response — Psalm 23.   The Lord is our shepherd.

Revelation 7:9-17.  “Who are these, robed in white?” one of the elders asks John. These are disciples of Jesus who entered into Christ’s own suffering and the suffering of the world.

John 10:22-30.  The works of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, are done in the name of the Father and testify to his oneness with the Father. His sheep hear his voice and follow (do the same works).

This week: For our confessions this week we use a shared prayer of confession.  In our intercessions we pray for unity among Christians.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. (Psalm 105:3)

Confession: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and our fellow human beings, in thought…  Spend time bringing your thought life before God.  Confess you sin and pray for renewal.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  Remember that God’s Spirit brings unity.  Pray that we may all hear the voice of the Spirit that draws us closer together.

Adoration Focus: Praise the Lord… who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psalm 103:5)

Confession: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and our fellow human beings, in deed…  Spend time examining your actions.  Make your confession to God and pray that your actions may reflect the light and love of God and that they may build his kingdom.

Shared Focus:  Pray that we may all know Christ as the priority in our lives and that He may be our unifying factor.

Thursday:

Adoration Focus: But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. (Psalm 102:12)

Confession: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and our fellow human beings, in the evil we have done…  Reflect on your life and bring any specifically destructive acts you have committed before God for forgiveness.  Hear the Word of Forgiveness, “Your sins are forgiven.”   In renewal seek out the ways of the Lord.

Shared Focus: Pray that we may have a unity that extends beyond our own prejudices that we have developed towards denominations and people different from ourselves.

Friday:

Adoration Focus: I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will sing praise. (Psalm 101:1)

Confession: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and our fellow human beings, in the good we have not done.  Examine your life and its motivations.  Examine its paralysis and apathy.  Bring your confession to God and pray that you may follow where He leads.

The Word:

Shared Focus: Pray that we may have a unity that extends beyond rich and poor and class.  In Christ we are levelled!

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3)

Confession: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and our fellow human beings, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.   Confess your lack of vision and knowledge of God’s Kingdom. Confess your failures and stubbornness. Pray that God may bring you liberation and open your eyes to his ways.

Shared Focus: Pray for a unity that extends beyond barriers of colour and culture.  That Christ may be our unity.

Personal prayers:

Dedication: “Almighty God, who has poured upon us the new light of thine Incarnate Word; grant that the same light enkindled in our hearts may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Sunday:

Adoration Focus: The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. (Psalm 99:1)

Confession: “We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.  For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your Name.  Amen.”

The Word:

Shared Focus:  Pray today that as we worship God we may have a sense that we worship with our brothers and sisters from all churches all over our world.  God’s Spirit is poured out upon us all!
