Devotional Diary 27 June – 3 July 2016

Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

Third July is the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

2 Kings 5:1-14. The king of Aram sends his army commander, Naaman, to the king of Israel to be cured of leprosy. The king of Israel sends him to Elisha. He sends Naaman to wash in the Jordan River for healing.

Psalm 30. A psalm in thanksgiving for healing from a deadly disease.

Galatians 6:1-16.  Paul sets up the dichotomy of life in the Spirit and life in the flesh, then writes in large, capital letters: “THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WANTING TO PUT A GOOD FACE FORWARD IN THE FLESH ARE THE ONES WHO ARE COMPELLING YOU TO BE CIRCUMCISED, AND IT’S JUST TO KEEP FROM BEING PERSECUTED BECAUSE OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST.” In other words, they may seem to have good intentions — to keep these Christians in Galatia from persecution as Christians, since by circumcision they could also claim to be Jews who were not subject to persecution — but those intentions are entirely wrong, focused more on saving the flesh than full submission to Christ in the Spirit.

Luke 10:1-11, 16-20. Jesus sends out seventy disciples in pairs with instructions to proclaim the arrival of God’s kingdom in word and deed, and they return with joy.
