23 February 2020 is Transfiguration Sunday

Exodus 24:12-18. The mystery and awe of God’s holy presence: God calls Moses up on the mountain, and Moses enters the cloud of God’s glory.

Psalm 99

2 Peter 1:16-21. Peter says, “We had been eyewitnesses of his majesty … we were with him on the holy mountain … So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed.”

Matthew 17:1-9Matthew’s account of the Transfiguration.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. (Psalm 105:3)

Confession: This week we look at certain resources that God has given us.  How are we using/abusing them? Today simply try to name some resources’ and begin to examine your use of them.

Confession: Lord, help us to use the resources that you have given us responsibly and in ways that reflect your Kingdom and rule.

Adoration Focus: Praise the Lord… who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psalm 103:5)

Confession: We focus on the resources of this earth.  Water, land, minerals, fuel, forests, etc.  In our short –sightedness and greed we have cause much damage and suffering.  Lord help us, each one, to take the call to conserve and to be responsible to heart

Adoration Focus: But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. (Psalm 102:12)

Confession: We focus on the resource of money.  Lord, our use of money reflects our priorities.  Help us to place this important area under your direction, and to seek your Kingdom first in this area also.

Confession: Lord, you have made vast spiritual resources available to us.   You have given us all we need to live a full life of love.  Enable us to open up your gifts and to share these with each other.

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3)

Confession: We pray for guidance as to how you would have us use the gifts and abilities you have placed within us.

Confession: Today we bring the resource of time before you, O God.  Help us to use time wisely.  We thank you for this gift.  May our use of it reflect your love, your order, and your priorities.  Release us from all that “drives” our time in inappropriate ways.

16 February 2020 is the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany

Deuteronomy 30:15-20From Moses’ final sermon: There are two ways—life and prosperity or death and endless troubles. The way of life requires us to walk in God’s ways and not bow down to or serve any other gods.

Psalm 119:1-8.

1 Corinthians 3:1-9. Despite their spiritual riches, Christians in Corinth were still living by the flesh as cliques forming around preferred leaders. To live by the Spirit is to recognize they are God’s field, God’s building.

Matthew 5:21-37. “You have heard it said… but I tell you.” Part I of two weeks of Rules of Relationships. This week: Overcoming sin.

 Monday

Adoration Focus: We are called to respond to God in many ways. In our adoration focus we look at some of these ways.  Today, “Glory in the name of the Lord”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole-heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when I feel like it.

Seeking the Kingdom: The church has a role to play in all areas of life.  This week we pray for some of these concerns that the church is called to.

Shared Focus: Christ came to bring reconciliation.  Pray that the church may make this ministry of reconciliation relevant.  Pray that the peoples of your land may come closer together in creativity and peace.

Personal prayers: (Use this section to list people you need to pray for or situations of personal concern that you need to bring before God in prayer)

Dedication:  Remember the bracelets with the letters W W J D on them?  Those bracelets remind us to ask the question, “What Would Jesus Do?” in every situation of our lives.  This week as you face each day why not ask yourself that question and as you ask it, let Christ live in and through you.

Tuesday 

Adoration Focus: Today, “Lift up His holy name.”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole-heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when we get our way.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: The call goes out from the prophets to facilitate economic justice.  Pray that the church may be a creative part of this process.   Thank God for those within the church whose are reflecting on this issue from God’s perspective and are voicing Godly concerns.

Wednesday

Adoration Focus: Today, “Love the Lord your God.”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole-heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when our power base is not threatened.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: The call goes out to feed the poor and alleviate poverty.  Pray that the church may take this call to heart and reach out in compassion.

Thursday

Adoration Focus: Today, “Praise His holy name.”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole-heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when it costs us little.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: The call goes out for the church to be part of the fight against crime and corruption.  Pray that we may build relationships across all barriers and that mutual love and respect for life may be our guide as peoples in our land.

Friday 

Adoration Focus: “Prostrate yourself before the Lord.”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when it suites our timetable.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  The call goes out for the church to care for people with HIV/AIDS.  Pray that the church may deal with this issue with deep compassion and embrace all who suffer.

Saturday 

Adoration Focus: Today, “Sing a new song to His name.”

Confession: How do we “reserve our worship”?  This week we examine ways we do this and pray that we may worship God always, everywhere and whole heartedly.  Today’s focus: Only when I can make sense of my situation.

Shared Focus: The call goes out to the church to help build family life.  Pray that we may promote healthy families and good family dynamics. Pray for families that do not fit the traditional mould, that they too may find a place of belonging in our communities.

Sunday 

Adoration Focus: Today, “Bow before the name of the Lord.”

Shared Focus:  The call goes out to the church to strengthen the moral fibre of our country.  Lord, you have called us to a whole new way of life.  Help us not to compromise the values of your call and help us to promote these values in every way we can.  May your holiness spread throughout the land.

Devotional Diary 3 – 9 February 2020

9 February 2020 is the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

Isaiah 58:1-12. The fast God chooses and honours reflects real change towards justice and mercy in the lives of people and communities.

Psalm 112: 1-10

1 Corinthians 2:1-16. Paul’s proclamation in Corinth was not based on elegant human wisdom, but on spiritual wisdom displayed with power.

Matthew 5:13-20.  The Sermon on the Mount continues: “You are salt and light. I have come to fulfil the law and teach you to do likewise.”

This week:  Our adoration focus comes from the opening verses of Psalm 95.  Our confession focus is based on the prayer of an unknown soldier.  You are invited to reflect on this prayer a line at a time and let that thought lead you into confession.  By the end of the week we will have moved through the entire prayer.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: Come let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.  (Psalm 95:1)

Confession: “I asked for strength that I may achieve; I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.”  (Let these thoughts lead you into confession and healing.)

The Word:  See readings above or use you own devotional aids.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  Pray that your community may be a forgiving community and that this forgiveness may lead to reconciliation.  Pray that we may find our example for forgiveness and reconciliation in Christ.

Personal prayers: (Use this section to list people you need to pray for or situations of personal concern that you need to bring before God in prayer)

Dedication:  What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Tuesday:

Adoration Focus: Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and praise.  (Psalm 95:2)

Confession: “I asked for health that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity that I might do better things.”

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Pray that your community may be a supportive community.  Pray that we may take hold of the gift of encouragement with both hands.  Pray that God may enable you to encourage someone today.

Personal Prayers:

Dedication:  What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Wednesday:

Adoration Focus: For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. (Psalm 95:3)

Confession: “I asked for riches that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise.”

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Pray that your community may be a community of the poor, that even those at the lowest rung of the ladder may be treated like those at the top.  Pray that God would abolish favouritism in our midst.  Each one is an important part of the body of Christ.

Personal prayers:

Dedication:  What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Thursday:

Adoration Focus: In His hands are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. (Psalm 95:4)

Confession: “I asked for power that I might have the praise of men; I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.”

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Pray that your community may be a community of hope.  Pray that we may hear words of hope and not despair.  Pray that our home community may be a place where those who have lost hope may find it.  Pray that our eyes may be open to see Jesus the Light of the World shining in our midst.

Dedication:  What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Friday:

Adoration Focus: The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. (Psalm 95:5)

Confession: “I asked for all things that I might enjoy life; I was given life that I might enjoy all things.”

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  Pray that your community may be a community of power, not to laud it over others, or to make our names great, but power to serve and to pour out our lives for many.

Dedication: What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our maker… (Psalm 95:6)

Confession: “I got nothing that I had asked for, but everything that I had hoped for.”

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Pray that your community may be a community of faith. That we would not just speak words but that our faith would be a biblical faith that walks with God in trust and dares to live by God’s Kingdom values.

Dedication: What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                                                  (Micah 6:8)

Sunday:

Adoration Focus: …he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. (Psalm 95:7)

Confession: “Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered; I am, among all men, most richly blessed.”

Dear Lord, forgive us when we do not walk in faith and enable us to walk humbly with our God.

The Word:

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  Pray that your community may be a community of worship in Spirit and in truth.  That is a community that worships in response to the revelation in Jesus Christ.  Holy Spirit lead us in our worship today.

Personal prayers:

Dedication:  What does the Lord require of you – but to do justly – to love mercy – and to walk humbly with your God.                                                                                                                   (Micah 6:8)
