Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

Sunday 17 January 2021 is the Third Sunday of Epiphany

1 Samuel 3:1-10 (11-20) Samuel had some difficulty responding to a call from God. The message with the call (verses 11-20) was even harder to deliver to one who had been a father and a mentor.

Psalm Response: Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20. Paul confronts the ease with which some in the church in Corinth could justify using prostitutes. This is no mere economic arrangement, Paul reminds us. Just as in marriage we are made one with a spouse, so in baptism we have been made one with Christ. As spouses belong to and are united with each other, so we belong to and are united with Christ. We are to give glory and allegiance to the One to whom we belong.

John 1:43-51 Jesus calls Philip to follow him. Philip announces to Nathanael that he has found the one expected by Moses and the prophets. Nathanael is sceptical until Jesus tells him he was watching Nathanael as he was sitting under a fig tree.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: (Psalm 12:7) O Lord, you will keep us safe and protect us…

Confession: This week: Examining our expectations. Often we have the wrong expectations and we miss the work of God’s Spirit in our midst because we are looking in the wrong place!  This week spend time listing your expectations then ask God to reveal the work that He is doing around you.  Then submit your expectations to God’s ways. Pray that God will allow you to find joy in being part of His work, according to His plan and timing. “In His time, in His time, He makes all things beautiful in His time.” Today’s focus: Are my expectations self-centred?

The Word: See readings above or use your own reading plan.

The Baptism of Jesus

Devotional Diary 4 – 10 January 2021

Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

Sunday 10 January is the first Sunday after Epiphany Sunday: Baptism of our Lord

 Readings for the week:

Genesis 1:1-5Darkness, chaos, waters, and then the Word that brings order to them all; the emergence of light from the midst of darkness. The Hebrew reads “Day 1.”

Psalm 29. Floods, tornadoes, lightning strikes, devastation, and God reigning in the midst of it all — images of the awesome and dangerous power of God.

Acts 19:1-7.  This story is a reminder of the influence and extent of the ministry of John the Baptizer — reaching all the way from Judea to the western shores of Asia Minor (Turkey) by mid-century (probably some 25-30 years after his execution). John had taught people to live differently in light of the coming Kingdom. What they didn’t know was how the Holy Spirit would give them the power of life. It is probably no accident that Luke tells us the number of these believers was about 12, a symbol of the 12 apostles and the 12 tribes of Israel, for Ephesus became the seat of apostolic ministry in and from western Asia Minor for decades to come.

Mark 1:4-11.  While John’s baptismal ministry seems to unite folks from Judea and all Jerusalem in confession and repentance, his baptism of Jesus “splits the heavens” (like lightning). The announcement of the voice from the heavens (like thunder) answers the hope for the arrival of one chosen by God to pour out the Holy Spirit.

 Monday:

Adoration Focus: But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 59:16)
