Devotional Diary 13 – 19 June 2016

Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

19 June is the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

1 Kings 19:1-18.  Elijah is on the run, sure he is alone and being hunted down, but God is in pursuit to put him back in service.

Psalm Response: Psalm 42  “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted with me?” The psalmist struggles with hope and trust, much as Elijah does in the first reading.

Galatians 3:23-29. Under the law, we were under a disciplinarian. Baptized into Christ, we can all live by faith.

Luke 8:26-39.  Jesus and the Gerasene man possessed by demons. Jesus casts out “Legion,” and the man is delivered, clothed and in his right mind. The locals are terrified.

This week: Our adoration focus reflects on Psalm 8.  In our shared prayer focus we pray for people we know who are involved in certain professions and work.

Monday:

Adoration Focus: O Lord, our Lord, your greatness is seen in all the world!  (Psalm 8:1)

Confession: In our confessions this week we focus on freedom.  God has given us the gift of freedom.  Ask, “Why has he given us freedom?”  How have we taken hold of this gift?  How has it empowered us?  How have we abused it?  Each day reflect on what you are freed from and then, what you are freed for.   Today: Freed from death, freed for life.
