Devotional Diary 11 – 17 June 2018

Readings for this week with thanks to www.umcdiscipleship.org

Sunday 17 June is the fourth Sunday after Pentecost

1 Samuel 15:34-16:13.  The Lord interrupts Samuel’s grief over Saul’s many failures and sends him to Jesse of Bethlehem to anoint one of his sons as the Lord would show him.

Psalm 72.  Psalm 72 celebrates what a good king would do, what respect he could expect, and what hopes the people might have for him and his reign.

2 Corinthians 5:6-17. Since we are in Christ, a new creation, we are empowered to live for him.

Mark 4:26-34.  Two parables of the kingdom of God: seed scattered that takes root, grows, and leads to harvest, and mustard weed –a woody, fast-growing and spreading, persistent nuisance in Middle Eastern fields…

For our confessions we revisit a cycle of questions (found under the confession focus for each day).

The prayers of intercession are based on a prayer in “The Methodist Service Book.”

Monday:

Adoration Focus: Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. (Psalm 47:1)

Confession: Lord, forgive me when I rely only on my own strength and I ignore your call to share in the richness of your infinite resources.  Help me to “plug-in” and to live out of your power.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Hear us, Lord God, as we pray for your one holy Church: make us all one, so that the world may believe.

Personal prayers: (Use this section to list people you need to pray for or situations of personal concern that you need to bring before God in prayer)

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

 Tuesday:

Adoration Focus: Be still and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)

Confession: Lord, forgive me when I fill my life with hurry and never touch base with your order and love.  Help me to listen to your breathing and to be filled with your breath.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: We pray that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you: grant that Your name may be glorified by all people

Personal Prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

Wednesday:

Adoration Focus: Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever. (Psalm 45:6)

Confession: Lord, forgive me when I live only for what I can get.  Lord, I find it so hard not to get swallowed by the spirit of materialism, and sometimes I don’t even recognise that I am guided by its ethics.  Set me free that I may be guided by your values.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Guide and strengthen all ministers of your gospel: make them faithful in your service.

Personal prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

Thursday:

Adoration Focus: Then will I go to the altar of God, to God my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.  (Psalm 43:4)

Confession: Lord, I do not have a firm faith; at times I doubt and am unable to trust you. O Lord, strengthen my faith, I pray, that I may find my peace in you.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom: Inspire and lead all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world: establish justice and peace among all people.

Shared Focus:

Personal prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

Friday:

Adoration Focus: As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. (Psalm 42:1)

Confession: Lord, I am so reluctant to actively witness to your glory.  Lord, forgive me and show me how to witness in loving and creative ways.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Have compassion on all who suffer from any sickness, grief or trouble: deliver them from their distress.

Personal prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

Saturday:

Adoration Focus: Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.  Amen and Amen. (Psalm 41:13)

Confession: Lord I am so self-absorbed I find it difficult to praise others and even to really lose myself in my praise of you.  Forgive me Lord and give my heart wings to rise up in praise.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus: Give us courage to do your will in all that we undertake: reveal the life of Christ within us.

Personal prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6

Sunday:

Adoration Focus: Many, O Lord my God are the wonders you have done. (Psalm 40:5)

Confession: Lord you have said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God.”  I have sought first my own kingdom.  Forgive me and help me to have Godly priorities.

The Word: See readings above.

Seeking the Kingdom:

Shared Focus:  We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory: bring us all to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Personal prayers:

Dedication: Not by might nor by power but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6
